The Department of Plastic Surgery deals with the repair, reconstruction, or replacement of physical defects of form or function involving the skin, craniomaxillofacial structures, hand, extremities, breast and trunk, external genitalia or cosmetic enhancement of these areas of the body.

The field of Plastic Surgery ranges from breast reconstruction and wound healing to the treatment of scars and wrinkles. Plastic Surgery researchers study the effects of aging and disease on human tissue, new kinds of bandages to improve the treatment of battlefield and other injuries, certain cells in our bodies that can help wounds heal without scars, and a wide range of other topics.

Our research endeavors are dedicated to the advancement of reconstructive surgery and academic medicine. We are conducting clinical studies that focus on increasing the safety and efficacy of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction and we are working to develop new substitutes for traditional bone grafts, new reconstructive treatments for major traumatic injuries, and new surgical techniques to help children born with severe facial deformities.
